My name is Katie. I’m a Registered Dietitian (RD) and Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). I have been working in health education for almost a decade now.
I didn’t always know what I wanted to do when I “grew up” but I did know that I have this innate ability to read people and want to help them from the inside out.
I tended to be sick a lot as a kid, especially when I was in high school. I was on several medications for various ailments. I didn’t understand why doctors didn’t take more time to find the “root” of the problem instead of putting a band aid (i.e. medications) on top and sending you on your way home.
Having said that, I want to give you a little bit more background of why I created this website.
I haven’t always taken care of my health, at least not the way I take care of it now. I payed my own way through school, working multiple jobs as a result.
Working two jobs and going to school full-time increased my stress and provided me with an erratic eating schedule. When I did eat, I didn’t always make the best food choices and sometimes I wouldn’t eat at all.
During times of stress, food was my comfort. And typically, large portions of food. I didn’t know when I would have the time to eat again so I would eat large portions to “hold me over” (insert eye-rolling at myself).
I started to gain weight and felt depressed. My diet was heavy in carbohydrates and fats, and as a result, my blood sugar increased and my health declined. I was never diagnosed with diabetes officially, partly because I think I was too scared to go to the doctors office, BUT I have a lot of compassion and sympathy for those who suffer more than I do –> and this is why I want to help!
I have discovered what works for me and my family. I learned how to lose weight in a healthy way, heal high blood sugar, high blood pressure and cholesterol using a natural approach rather than relying on my doctors advice to start taking medications.
I remind myself that everything that goes in our mouths is either feeding our health or feeding disease.
I may not be in control of my illness, but I AM in control of my wellness.
It’s never too late to take control of your life. This website was created to help those dealing with diabetes [heart disease, cholesterol, obesity or metabolic disease] to take control and don’t let disease control you.
My advice to anyone who’s diagnosed with a chronic medical illness, like diabetes, is to OWN IT right away. Don’t let the shock and depression from being diagnosed with the disease stop you from owning it.
It’s important not to isolate yourself, and remember that exercise, healthy eating and natural remedies are keys to getting your life under control.
