You might have heard about collagen recently as it seems to be a new buzzword these days, but collagen is not new and is naturally found in your body. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a key constituent of all connective tissues. It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. It’s what helps give our skin strength and elasticity. Collagen aids in keeping our joints and tendons together, decreasing inflammation which naturally balances out our blood sugar.

Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. The composition of collagen is considered unique given its high hydroxyproline content. If you lack the amino acids that combine to form collagen, your body’s cells can’t produce enough of it. Threonine is an essential amino acid for collagen production.

Just like everything else, our bodies collagen production starts to naturally begin to slow down as we age. Lifestyle factors such as eating a diet high in processed sugar and other foods, smoking, excessive alcohol, and high amounts of sun exposure can also contribute to depleting levels of collagen. Collagen foods and supplements can be used to support healthy hair, skin, nails, bone and joint health, digestion, blood sugar management, muscle recovery, and more.

Thankfully, bone broth is being promoted more in our local markets which is rich in collagen. However, not everyone enjoys a warm cup of bone broth. Personally, I prefer the supplement and Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides is my go-to!

Still wondering what collagen is good for?

Well I’m happy to share with you the top 5 reasons collagen can boost your health and benefit your blood sugar.

5 Ways Collagen Can Boost Your Health:

#1 – Helps with muscle recovery

Collagen peptides supply amino acids that are needed to build new collagen.
Collagen peptides are high in specific amino acids such as Glycine and Proline that are especially needed for the production of new collagen.

Supplementation with collagen peptides could completely prevent the exercise induced loss of collagen in our urine; ultimately, restoring the balance of collagen in our body.

Collagen supplements are the perfect protein to consume before and after exercise, helping to maintain and restore the protein content of muscle – naturally, increasing athletic performance.

#2 – Reduces joint pain

Stiff and/or swollen joints? Yep, that could a loss of collagen overtime and now your tendons and ligaments are moving with less ease.

Collagen allows our bones to glide and move without pain. Perfect for anyone suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other joint pain and disorders.

#3 – Improves health of hair, skin and nails

Collagen Peptides naturally restore moisture in our skin and prevent skin aging. It brings cells in our body back to life!

Collagen protein is the building block to our hair and nails. Ever had split ends or peeling nails? Well, a lack of collagen to be to blame. Adding collagen into your regimen can rejuvenate our hair follicles and build strength in nails.

#4 – Helps to heal your gut

Gastrointestinal disorders are amongst the most common health issues to affect Americans.
Some of the most common disorders are:
▪Acid reflux
▪Lactose and other food intolerances
▪Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD or IBS)
▪Celiac Disease (CD) and Non
     -Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS)
▪Chronic constipation and/or diarrhea
Prescription or over the counter drugs like antacids, steroids, anti-spasmodics, gas-relievers, and even anti-depressants are commonly used to treat digestive distress.
And many people find relief upon initial use of these so-called remedies. But the side effects of this temporary relief can be drastic and often serve to make the issues worse.
Vital Proteins Beef Gelatin and Collagen Peptides are a great, natural alternative to quick-fix medications. Rather than simply masking symptoms, the 18 amino acids found in collagen have the power to prevent and even heal many digestive disorders.

#5 – Improves liver health

If you’re looking to detox your body of harmful substances, forget the juice cleanse! Use collagen!

Collagen contains glycine which helps minimize damage your liver experiences when it absorbs foreign substances, toxins or alcohol that shouldn’t be passing through it.

Bone broth (as mentioned above) can extremely help to cleanse your liver, reset your gut and balance out your blood sugar – improving your overall immune function.

  1. Thanks for such an informative article.
I have often heard about collagen in reference to bone, skin, and hair growth.
It was great to learn a little bit more about how and why it works, as well as see some of the options available for supplementation. Do you have a flavour recommendation for the collagen peptides supplement?

    1. Personally, I like the unflavored one because then it mixes well with anything. You can put it in your coffee, tea, soups, eggs, oatmeal…the options are endless. I’ve also tried a coconut vanilla flavor and the dark chocolate which are also great flavors. No bitter aftertaste.
